REGENERATIONET: MUTUAL GROWTH THROUGH COLLECTIVE LEARNING

The objective of the RegeneratioNet project was to examine and compare the best experiences of three partner cities, Catania, Novara and Navalcarnero, in order to identify elements that can replicated in other environments with required adjustments.

The first phase (which ended in March) consisted of visiting each partner city and identifying its best experiences. Subsequently, a second phase began during which these experiences were compared and the transferable elements of each were identified.

Each city’s project was analyzed by means of five different documents. The first document contained a brief description of the initiative while the second analyzed other aspects such as the period in which the project took place, the origin and the legislative references. The third document was more detailed and contained quantitative data. The fourth document was of a technical nature and analyzed the projectual aspects of the initiative while the fifth contained the financial framework and a brief examination of the accomplished results.

This approach, though lean and schematic, allowed for a clear illustration of each project in order to facilitate their comparison.

The above described documents make up the main part of the project’s final report. This report was enriched with the contribution of each partner with regards to the general framework (structure of the report, illustration of the activities carried out and their relation to the European context) and the in-depth analysis of specific topics (general restoration planning; integrated policies for socio-economic recuperation; the regeneration of local areas; the valorization of urban spaces; mobility strategies; urban waste management policies). The contribution of each partner city concluded with considerations on the dissemination of best practices in urban regeneration.

The results of this study – which unfortunately cannot be printed for lack of funding, but will be made available on internet for downloading – were presented during events organized in each city.

During a press conference held in February in the city of Novara, the project’s staff met the community stakeholders and attempted to demonstrate how RegeneratioNet can be inserted in the programmed regeneration initiatives.

Additionally, two conferences that were open to the public were organized at Navalcarnero and Catania, during the months of June and July. The respective regional authorities participated in both conferences (Comunidad de Madrid and Region of Sicily) and the project’s activities, along with the European context in which it is inserted, were illustrated to the citizens of the cities.

These events marked the end of a very important growth process which lasted less than a year, but whose results will last much longer.
